In Reiner Knizia's High Society, players bid against each other to acquire the various trappings of wealth (positive-number and multiplier cards) while avoiding its pitfalls (negative number and divisor cards). While bidding, though, keep an eye on your remaining cash - at the end of the game, even though all those positive-number cards might add up to a win, the player with the least money isn't even considered for victory.

  • Gorgeously reimagined with illustration from Marie Bergeron.
  • Rejuvenated version of the classic Reiner Knizia auction game with never before seen cards.
  • Incredibly easy to learn but challenging to master the balance between oppulance and reasonable spending.
  • Clever scoring mechanics leave you wondering right up until the last card is counted.

I didn't expect a tiny card game to get this tense — my group spent ten minutes just deciding whether to bid on the multiplier or let the negative cards pile up. The twist where whoever has the least money gets eliminated first keeps everyone sweating, even the person in the lead.

Played this with three friends who usually hate auction games and they were hooked by round two. The tension of deciding whether to spend big on a multiplier or hold back for the negative cards is what makes it, and the whole thing fits in about twenty minutes.

The bidding mechanic is simple to teach but has real bite — you never quite know when to bail on an auction. Only downside is it really needs three or more players; with two it falls flat. Still, it's become our go-to filler game.
